Program Notes

Syncopation in Blue (for Concert Band) is an original composition by Mark Wolfram.

Syncopation truly came of age in the era of ragtime -- but was made most popular in the Roaring '20s. From there on it was a staple of classical and popular music cultures, be it George Gershwin or Benny Goodman.

Syncopation in Blue (for Concert Band) employs all types of syncopation: on the beat, off the beat and even unusual melodic rhythms -- all couched in a "bluesy" tonality. While sounding light and fun, this piece challenges even the best ensemble's grasp of style, articulation, precision and phrasing.
