Program Notes

Super-Secret Super Sleuths was written as a dedication to my son Nickolas. When he was two years old, my wife made up a “secret” group for the two of them -- the Super Sleuths! -- as a way of convincing him to go to the store and run other errands with her. They would sneak around the grocery store or shoe store, searching for clues to some make-believe mystery, and she came up with words to a song they would sing while off on their pretend mission:

Super Secret Miss-ion!
Super Secret Nick-o-las!
We’re the secret Super Sleuths,
‘Cause we’re sneak-sneak-sneakin’ around!

Eventually I added some melody to the words and would play their theme song on the piano while they were getting ready to sneak out of the house on another adventure. One day I realized that it would make a fun band piece, and the result is an homage to music from classic spy-themed TV shows and movies such as Mission: Impossible, the James Bond series, The Incredibles, and even Austin Powers.
