Program Notes
McAlister's studies with Frederick Fennell and Alfred Reed lend insight and mastery to his obvious affection for the medium. Lovers of Walton and Copland will respond warmly to the vigour and delicacy of this brief toccata, while anyone who appreciates consummate craftsmanship, expert scoring and part writing will enjoy its command of nuance and effect.
- Program Note from publisher
A Summer Flourish is a toccata for winds of flamboyant and occasionally ornate character -- a flourish -- which is intended to evoke a brilliant spectacle of summer. The wide intervals of the timpani’s opening statement not only establish the energetic character of the music, but also act as musical seeds from which a profusion of motives develop, growing vigorously in all directions. Although I did not seek to evoke any specific images in this music, I invite listeners to allow their imaginations free run through the textures of this brief pageant, toward the discovery of their own images of summer.
