Program Notes

This inviting new suite features four diverse French songs in an attractive sonic package. Beginning with a field drum solo, the first song, “The Duke of Marlborough Goes to War,” will be known by many as “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” It is marked “Alla Marcia.” The key center is F major. Now in F minor, the slower more cantabile second song, “Chason Triste,” marked “Adagio,” precedes the animated third song, “Bon Voyage, Monsieur Dumollet,” marked “Allegretto” The key center here is B major. The energetic concluding song, “Petit Papa,” in E major, is marked “Allegro.” The colorful scoring and the interesting melodies contribute greatly to the work’s significant appeal.
