Program Notes

Stella Maris was commissioned in memory of Marissa Alp, a beloved daughter, teacher, and friend who passed away at the age of twenty-five due to an undiagnosed defect in the mitral valve of her heart. Her passing on December 21, 2007, was a shocking and unexpected loss to all whom she graced. The school at which Marissa served as a teacher was the Celia Cruz High School of Music in Bronx, New York. It is a magnet school for students with instrumental and vocal talents. The music department chair, Penelope Smetters-Jacono, Marissa's friend and colleague, teamed up with Marissa's parents, Peter and Carol Lee Alp, and the school principal (Jerrod Mabry) to create a musical commission project in tribute to Marissa. It was truly my honor to compose it.

"Stella Maris" is the Latin term for Polaris, the North Star. (Religiously, the same term is synonymous with Virgin Mary). Symbolically, its role is as "the star that protects and guides." The name Marissa (equivalent to Maris) is the basis for this traditional term. The philosophical stance of Marissa as our guiding and protective star is the premise for this memorial and tribute.
