Program Notes

St. Michael was composed while the composer was in Rome. The work consists musical material derived from chants used in the Requiem Mass and uses similar antiphonal effects to Gabrieli. It was premiered on 17 July 1959 at the Cheltenham Festival by members of the London Symphony Orchestra, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies conducting.
