Program Notes
Written as part of a collection of young band works celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary, this composition is based on Kelligrew’s Soiree, a Newfoundland folk song that references a visit to the festival still held at the beginning of the Conception Bay South tourist season each July. A lively introduction leads to a first section with a jaunty melody that builds in intensity before reaching a brief, softer passage initially featuring the high woodwinds. Instruments are added as the piece proceeds to a spirited percussion break that leads to a thinly scored section with brief solos for alto saxophone, clarinet, and tenor saxophone. A loud, full-ensemble closing section brings the composition to a dramatic conclusion.
