Program Notes

A sustained D introduces the piece, which gradually turns into something more compelling. A melody is created with the Arabic maqam mode of quarter tones based on D·Eb·F#·G·A·C. In solemnity, it reflects a powerful spirit. Hence, the title (though it is not based on a famous vodka).

The mid-section chorale is also based on the maqam mode. However, the style is more mysterious than in the opening. From rehearsal letter I, a major mode is first introduced. The music should build to an intense conclusion. There is a modulation of the maqam mode at L. This is the point to add more energy and excitement.

Some parts of the music may be a little challenging and may not be accessible for everyone, but a musical experience is more than just playing the notes. I hope that everyone who plays this work will share its unique musical experience with the ensemble and the audience.

Commissioned by Kitakata High School Band.
