Program Notes

The Fabius-Pompey Middle School Band in Fabius, NY, commissioned Spirit of the Falcon in 2002. Under the direction of Michael Dardaris, Jr., the piece was used to celebrate the opening of the school's new auditorium in May of 2003.

The piece is basically an overture form, the opening section filled with exciting rhythms and occasional mixed meters. The lyrical middle section of the piece offers very accessible solo (or soli) opportunities for flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet and horn. The final section restates the original exuberant opening of the piece before moving to an even faster tempo in a coda filled with a combination of mixed meter and rhythmic intensity that is sure to deliver an exciting finish to the piece.
