Program Notes

This programmatic single-movement composition is segmented into several smaller sections that are designed to convey the associated history lesson of 16th century Spanish explorers who sailed to Florida and then Texas before being taken captive by the Native American Karankawa tribe for two years. After winning their freedom, leader Cabeza de Vaca’s joyous mood is reflected in a fast, rhythmic section which concludes the work.
