Program Notes

This enchanting, off-kilter waltz depicts shifting scenes at a magical ball. The work draws the audience in with a soft timpani roll at the beginning and builds momentum all the way to the conclusion. Musical lines dazzle and swirl about in this salute to magic and mystery.

Spellbound was commissioned by Tracy Redus and the Chisholm Trail Middle School Honor Band in Round Rock, Texas, in honor of Karen Barnett, a recent student who had passed away while attending Texas A&M University. Karen loved fantasy books and was an avid participant on the university quidditch team.

Karen's affinity for magic immediately set the tone for the work, which is a depiction of a waltz through a ballroom populated by witches, wizards, and a variety of fantastic creatures.
