Program Notes

A world of quiet mystery is evoked through combining the coloristic and technical aspects of the wind instruments. There are striking contrasts of dynamic levels, as well as contrasts between solo and tutti sections. The texture is lively and surprising with twittering, hissing, glissing, muted and jabbing sounds. Brief, cryptic chromatic motives are varied melodically and harmonically in the course of the three parts of the work, and rhythmic patterns mesh to create an open, free time continuum.
