Program Notes

A Southern Dawn is fashioned in the style of an old Negro spiritual. It is a lovely, haunting tone poem with trumpet and F horn (alto saxophone) solo. While conservative in technique and range, its flowing melodies and rich harmonies charm performers and audiences alike.

Commissioned by and dedicated to the Kirby High School District 140 Symphonic Band, Tunley Park, Illinois; Ray Forlenza, Director. It was premiered by the District 140 Band in May of 1998.
