Program Notes

Sonata for Winds demonstrates the ability of a composer to use new material in a form that has been popular for nearly two centuries and that was closely related to the earlier opera overture form. In this work Carter's fast first section comprises an AAB+A form, followed by the second subject at a slow tempo, the development section, the recapitulation (of the first subject only) and a coda.
