Program Notes

Soaring is an exciting composition for solo trumpet and concert band. The music is celebratory in nature and features the dynamic and rhythmic range of the trumpet. The piece opens with an American rhythmic gesture reminiscent of Aaron Copland and John Williams. The trumpet answers this gesture with a bold cadenza that will transform into the main melody a little later on in the piece.

This is a celebrative new work for solo trumpet with band accompaniment. The main theme, first played by the trumpet soloist, is syncopated and characterized by the interval of an ascending perfect fifth. A brief cadenza, reminiscent of the beginning material, anticipates the rousing finale. The colorful scoring is transparent enough to allow the trumpet soloist to be heard throughout. The accompaniment can be handled by advanced middle school or developing high school musicians, but a successful performance will require close attention to the varied rhythmic and stylistic details. Though more difficult, the solo part could be played by an accomplished high school musician, alumnus, local professional or guest artist.
