Program Notes
Commissioned by Anthony J. Maiello for the Texas Music Educators Association 2006 4-A Symphonic Band in San Antonio, TX, Skysplitter! received its world premiere performance at Lila Cockrell Theatre in February, 2006. It was written as an opener for the band and was guest conducted in its premiere performance by Anthony J. Maiello from George Mason University.
The piece was conceived during the 4th of July weekend of 2005. It was inspired by the majestic explosions of light and color from the fireworks that were illuminating the night-time sky. I immediately began work on the piece and finished it that summer. Skysplitter! is a show-opener filled with great energy and flare.
