Program Notes
This music was originally conceived as the second movement of a five-movement suite for four-part Cello Orchestra with Double Bass, titled Suite Concertante. Some years later, this suite was re-worked for full String Orchestra under the same title, and both versions were subsequently published. A setting for solo Alto Saxophone with Piano accompaniment, made at the suggestion of the American saxophone soloist, Fred Hemke, and edited by him, was the next published version of this music. An unpublished arrangement by the composer for solo Viola and Piano for the American violist, Pamela McConnell, became still another version in 1993. The present adaption for solo Alto Saxophone and Band was made for the Japanese saxophone virtuoso, Toshihisa Ogushi.
The music for all five versions has remained almost exactly the same, the only exception being a change of key for the viola version. This dreamy, gently undulating siciliana, with its haunting melodies has become one of the composer's most frequently performed works.
