Program Notes
Shriek! was inspired by Edvard Munch's painting The Scream. To me, this work represents an unbridled expression of anguish, that fundamental feeling of horror that we have all experienced. In Shriek!, I've tried to capture that overwhelming feeling of horrible anxiety and insecurity representative of a schizophrenic state of mind through the juxtaposition of tonal elements such as themes from Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and the hymn tune All Creatures of Our God and King with less stable pounding, swirling elements found in the piece.
Shriek! was written for and is dedicated to Dr. Robert Grechesky and the Butler University Wind Ensemble. It was premiered by them in the Spring of 1997. It has had subsequent performances by the University of Ohio Wind Ensemble, Oklahoma Baptist University Wind Ensemble, the Florida International University Wind Ensemble and Capital University Wind Ensemble.
Shriek! was the second place winner in the 1999 Penfield Wind Band Composition Competition.
