Program Notes

This work seeks to explore the idea of light shining through darkness. The music begins with lyrical somber sounds that linger from one phrase into the next, but then give way to bright, joyful and exuberant music. The sections of the band take the listener on a journey that explores a variety of emotional qualities, returning to the somber sounds of the opening of the piece. But once again, the music regains its uplifting character and presents the familiar hymn tune How Brightly Shines the Morning Star to bring the piece a brilliant conclusion.

This work was commissioned for the Ohio Music Educators Association, District XI High School Honor Band.
