Program Notes

Sheridan’s Ride is one of a number of pieces that Sousa wrote for which he drew inspiration from a literary source. The piece is divided into five “scenes historical:”

I Waiting for the Bugle
II The Attack
III The Death of Thoburn
IV The Coming of Sheridan
V The Apotheosis

Sousa drew his inspiration for these five scenes from Thomas B. Read’s stirring Civil War poem, Sheridan’s Ride. Sousa well remembered General Sheridan’s famous ride, because it took place near his native Washington, D.C. when he was nine years old.
