Program Notes

A magnificent tour de force for solo trumpet and wind ensemble composed by Jay Chattaway for trumpet virtuoso Jens Lindemann. The solo brilliantly showcases the full range of trumpet virtuosity with contrasting sections that feature lyrical playing, rapid tonguing, jazz inflections, and brilliant range and dexterity.

Shenandoah Fantasy was commissioned by Shenandoah University in Virginia to celebrate the inauguration of the sixteenth president of the university, Dr. Tracy Fitzsimmons. It was premiered by the Shenandoah University Symphony Orchestra at the inauguration ceremony in September of 2008. Jens Lindemann was the soloist, with the composer conducting.

The work is based on the familiar folk song and chantey Shenandoah. The soloist develops the theme through a set of variations, and features the trumpet, piccolo trumpet and flugelhorn. It also includes a multi-meter Latin section featuring jazz improvisation, as one of Dr. Fitzsimmons' special interests was Latin American studies.

The wind ensemble arrangement was premiered by the Shenandoah Wind Ensemble in April of 2009.
