Program Notes

On September 11, 1297, the Scottish fought for their independence from the British at Stirling Bridge across the River Forth. The Scottish forces, led by William Wallace and Andrew Moray, were victorious over the British at this battle. The event cast a shadow on history, legend, and popular culture, and the theme of an unexpected victory by the oppressed over their persecutor is one that resonates with all audiences.

The Shadow of Stirling Bridge for chamber winds attempts to evoke the resolve of that small but determined force going into battle against an overwhelming foe, and through sacrifice and determination ending up victorious.
