Program Notes
I originally wrote my Serenade in E-flat in early 2018 for the Whittlesey Concert Band. The Serenade begins with a simple tune in horn and saxophone, accompanied by rich low earthy clarinets, and then develops into a dance of only a few players, gradually increasing in range and density. The eventual overlap of two different tempo layers propels towards a more full orchestral climax. It is the variety of textures available in a large wind orchestra that I am so fond of and find myself using more often as I write for ensembles such as this.
