Program Notes

Season of Peace combines two familiar melodies, the traditional round Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) and the beloved Austrian carol Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht (Silent Night, Holy Night) composed in 1818 by Franz Gruber with lyrics by Joseph Mohr. The first verse of the carol concludes with the repeated phrase "Sleep in heavenly peace."

Historical Note: In December 1914, during the bloody days of the trench warfare during World War I, there were brief moment of unofficial ceasefires when German and British troops would cross over the dangerous “no man’s” land to celebrate the season with the enemy. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day of that year, gifts of food and souvenirs were exchanged, soldiers participated in joint burial services, and some were friendly enough to play soccer matches and sing carols.
