Program Notes

Commissioned by the Laboratory School Band of Eastern Kentucky University Richmond, Virginia - Ken Schubert, band director. dedicated to George Hurst.

- Program note from score

In commissioning this work for band, Mr. Schubert wanted an appropriate vehicle by which the school, the band and Mr. George Hurst, lifelong friend to musicians, music students and music teachers and local music merchant in Lexington, Kentucky, could be remembered. The title is taken from a beautiful seaside resort on the coast of southern Australia near Adelaide, which the composer had the oppotunity to visit while on a lecture-conducting tour of Australia during the summer of 1982. In constructing the piece, the composer felt it appropriate to use thematic material that was suggested (but not directly quoted) by the Model Laboratory High School Fight Song (No. 45) and Mr. Hurst's Coast Artillery Marching Song The Grand Old 53rd, opening theme.
