Program Notes

Scintilla is the Latin word for spark. For this music, I interpreted a spark as metallic, electric, and twitchy. After the opening spark-like sound, short motives and gestures mutate and dance to become new motives and gestures as the music gains speed and intensity to the end.

This flexible instrumentation version is based on the original trio for flute, clarinet, and alto sax completed in 2018. Special thanks to Chris Beaty, saxophonist at Texas A&M University-Commerce for organizing the original commission for woodwind trio. The premiere performance was given by the Texas A&M University-Commerce Faculty Woodwind Trio on March 11, 2018, at the North American Saxophone Conference at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
