Program Notes

Salvation Is Created is a choral work composed by Pavel Tchesnokov in 1912. It was one of the very last sacred works he composed before he was forced to turn to secular arts by the Soviet government. Although he never heard his own composition performed, his children had the opportunity to in the years following his death. Salvation Is Created was originally published in 1913 by J. Fischer and Bro., but its popularity drove editors to produce many different versions in both Russian and English. Scored for either six or eight voices, the work is a communion hymn based on a synodal Kievan chant melody and Psalm 74.

- Program Note from Wikipedia

Salvation Is Created (1912) is one in a cycle of ten communion hymns (Russian Orthodox Anthem), Op. 25, No.5, composed during Tchesnokov's tenure at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Moscow (around the turn of the century). It is based on a synodal Kievan chant. It is traditionally scored for six- to eight-voice types (SATTBB or SSAATTBB) unaccompanied, and the text is loosely translated “Salvation is created in the midst of the earth, 0 God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.”

- Program Note from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Wind Symphony concert program, 14 December 2016

This Russian Orthodox-style choral anthem was composed in 1912. It has been skillfully and faithfully recreated in this memorable chorale for young players using reduced instrumentation suitable even for smaller ensembles.
