Program Notes

This moving work was commissioned in celebration of the life of a young musician who passed away after being diagnosed with leukemia.

A well-conceived composition that features appealing melodic material and effective contrasts of tempo, dynamics, and texture, the piece begins with a slow introduction utilizing wind chimes that moves quietly to a faster, forward-moving section. The intensity builds to a brief full ensemble climax before proceeding to a soft rubato passage featuring a clarinet solo. Instruments are added, culminating in a powerful four-measure full ensemble statement before proceeding to an initially soft Con Spirito section that features solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet. A lyrical, reflective section follows, building to an exuberant climax before moving to a bright transitional passage. A final flowing section, conveying a sense of hope and faith, brings the piece to an emotional conclusion.
