Program Notes

Sacrifice was originally written as a choral piece when I was a freshman at Texas Christian University [TCU] for Ryan Forkner‘s masters conducting recital. The theme of the concert was the life of Christ, so I chose John 3:16 to set. It was premiered in the spring of 2004 in Robert Carr Chapel with the TCU Chamber Choir. When I played this piece for Mr. Gryzbowski, his comment was, “I feel like I am in church.” I wanted to transcribe this for symphonic band, which is Mr. Gryzbowski‘s medium, in appreciation for everything he has meant to me. Consider this piece a continuation of his legacy.

Every day, I am inspired by the impact his kindness, passion, and love of music had on me. In my time at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Tex., he taught me to always pursue excellence and continue my passion for the art of music.

Sacrifice is dedicated to Joe Grzybowski and in loving memory of Cathy Grzybowski.
