Program Notes

Written to pay homage to the tenacity of the human spirit and mankind’s achievements of flight and space exploration, the composition includes main themes presented in minor keys and asymmetric meters that provide a sense of thrust and momentum. A driving opening section features changing meters, dramatic dynamic changes, effective contrasts of texture, and an alto saxophone solo. A slower contrasting section, with emotional lines and lush harmonies, reflects on the many obstacles, failures, and disasters that occurred on the path to successful flight and space voyage as it moves to a triumphal climax, representing the view of earth from the portal of a spaceship..
