Program Notes
In 1955, Robert Russell Bennett composed Rose Variations, a concerto for cornet or trumpet and piano. Almost immediately he published it with band accompaniment. Rose Variations tells a story: The introduction, subtitled Garden Gate, begins the piece and ushers us in. We hear a very simple theme entitled Carolina (wild) Rose. Four variations follow:
1..The Dorothy Perkins (rambler) Rose
2..A waltz titled, Frau Karl Druschki (white) Rose
3..Cinnamon Rose (with hummingbird)
4..the conclusion, American Beauty (red) Rose
