Biography

Rodrigo Martínez Torres (b. 1992, Mexico City, Mex.) is a Mexican composer.

Martínez studied musical composition at the Florence Academy of Art, and at Núcleo Integral de Composition. He was a fellow of the Young Creators 2018-2019 program of the FONCA

As a composer, Martínez is interested in the abstraction of the Latin American musical language as a tool for new creations, as well as a multi-instrumentalist who works in different genres and styles. He was the winner of the Arturo Márquez 2017 composition contest with his piece Mambo Urbano for chamber orchestra, and with Radio Ruido he won the Caja de Viento 2017 call for compositions. His pieces have been performed by the Dutch Ensemble Model 62, by members of the CEPROMUSIC ensemble, and the LIMINAR ensemble, as well as by the Italian pianist, Gloria Campaner, and the Tamayo ensemble. His last artistic residency was at MacDowell Colony, New Hampshire (USA) in October 2019.

Besides being a composer, he is also a multi-instrumentalist; in 2015 he joined the Délicieux Choir. In 2016 he entered the New World Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was the principal double bass player. He is also a saxophonist in the Balkan music ensemble Kumpania. In 2017 he traveled to the United States and Brazil as a drummer for French singer Laure Briard. In 2017 SUPERSILVERHAZE was created, a psych rock band in which he is a drummer. In 2014 he created Monstruos del Mañana, a tropical psych rock band.
