Program Notes
The Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia (May 1-4, 1863) is regarded as Robert E. Lee's most brilliant victory. However, some events are not what they seem to be: Civil War historian Bruce Catton wrote that this "...dazzling victory was sterile." Two months later, with the South desperate to recoup the losses of its "victory," Lee led his men north to defeat at Gettysburg. In less than two years, he surrendered his army at Appomattox and the war was over. While a small country road, perhaps, Chancellorsville turned out to be an important thoroughfare in the ultimate preservation of the union.
- Program Note by composer
Taking you back in time to a pivotal point in the Civil War, it lets you feel the approach of the soldiers as they march into history. The opening imitates the sound of far-off fife and drums, joined shortly by the tuneful, martial strains of the full band. This wonderful patrol style march offers a terrific opportunity to tie in American history as well.
