Program Notes

Reuben and Rachel Reel is a short intermezzo dance piece. It is originally based on a comedic duet from 1871 written by Harry Birch and William Gooch.

The piece is designed for small school bands with limited instrumentation that may fluctuate from year to year. The composer spent seven years teaching small bands in small communities both in Texas and in Michigan, and understands the struggle of purchasing music that may or may not be able to be played again based on the instrumentation of the ensemble. Therefore, the composer wrote the piece so as to attempt to accommodate this perpetual issue that small bands run into.

The piece includes an optional clarinet part that goes above the break and matches the flute and oboe. This part can be omitted or it can be used at the educator’s discretion. The percussion parts are listed in order of importance or can be omitted altogether.
