Program Notes
The original version is for horn octet, published by the Hornists' Nest in 1980. Director Lowell Shaw gave me permission to make a concert band version, which is not difficult for a good high school band. The Retreat was expanded with a longer middle section. The Pumping Song begins with a balcony trumpet solo. Rich harmonies are found throughout the Retreat, with a bouncing melody following in the Pumping Song.
