Program Notes

Composer Brian Drake exhibits a great flair for musical drama and a distinct melodic gift. Emotions depicted in this heroic work range from the sadness of a captive to the ecstasy of freedom at the end as various thematic elements come together at the end of the piece for a stirring climax.

- Program Note from publisher

The Rescue is an exciting work written specifically for the Harford County (Md.) Middle School Honor Band. The piece musically depicts one person's attempt to escape captivity and danger while others on the outside seek to free the hero from certain doom. Through determination on both sides, the musical story reaches a victorious climax.

There are three motives/melodies representing each character or party: 1. The hero's melody can be found early in the clarinet and alto saxophones. It is passed around to many musicians in the ensemble. 2. The captors are represented by dissonant staccato quarter notes. 3. The rescuer's melody is first represented by the clarinets. All three melodies come together to form the climax of the piece.
