Program Notes

The title is a reference to an asteroid impact that struck the earth on the Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago, leaving the Chicxulub Crater, which measures 110 miles in diameter and 12 miles deep. Scientists consider this impact to be the cause of a climate disruption and the mass extinction of all plant and animal life, including the dinosaurs. Somewhat programmatic, the work unfolds in three distinct and contrasting sections. The introductory Time of the Ancients represents a time before the impact. The much quicker Reign of Fire depicts the cataclysmic moment of impact, while the closing New World represents the stillness and darkness that led to the ultimate rebirth of the planet.
