Program Notes
Hernandiana Rhapsody is a ballet conceived as a tribute to the Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez (1910-1942) on the centenary of his birth. This author, so local and universal expression, sings of love and land, to the strength of the human being, and his sadness. In Hernandiana Rhapsody the inspiration comes directly from his poems, intertwining them with his tragically short life. This drama is immediately reflected in the brief introduction of the work, and also in the melancholy of the closing stages. The central part is the musical transposition of some of Miguel's poems. The work won first prize at the III International Composition Competition Villa de Muro, 2010, from among more than thirty pieces from around the world.
Structure: 1. PROLOGUE: TRAGIC INTUITION ("As the bull I was born for mourning" ...) A tutti has taken the first of the two issues that symbolize the poet; the second is a suffering only by the continued clarinet and oboe. These themes return several times, articulating the different sections.
2. DANCE I: THE POETIC CONCERN Miguel feels born within the call of art. It is a lively Spanish dance, which becomes increasingly dramatic and expressive of suffering.
3. ROMANCE: LOVE ("I threw you a lemon, and so bitter ...") The appearance of love, tenderly played by the English horn.
4. ROUND: POOR CHILDREN ("The Yuntero child") Miguel remembers the humble kid who was shepherding in the fields of Orihuela. A simple melody repeated obsessively represents this punished child.
5. DANCE II: (EL UNIVERSAL POET) ANTHEM ("Sad wars") AND DANCE II (Continued) Miguel's vital dance is interrupted by war.
6. EPILOGUE: THE POET AND DEATH. The brief but intense life of Miguel goes here as a sweet, sad sigh.
