Program Notes
In the 19th century a large wave of immigrant Jews arrived in Belém, Brazil, from Morocco, attracted by religious freedom and an international campaign made by the Grão Pará Province. The city took in a huge Sephardic community (Jews originally coming from the Iberian Peninsula whospread all over the Mediterranean Coast).
The composer pays homage to the people and culture of the Sephardim of Belém (from which he descends) through the use of four folkloric songs in the free form of a rhapsody.
Rapsódia sefaradi (Sephardic Rhapsody) for symphonic band was commissioned and composed in 2013 by the Festival Música Das Américas (Music of the Americas Festival) in Belém do Pará, Brazil.
