Program Notes

Commissioned by the South Central Illinois Band Directors Associations for their 50th annual festival, December 6, 1993.

- Program note from score

Quintessence is defined as the fifth essence of the pure essence of the basic nature of something. The set of variations strives to capture the spirit of a fifty-year celebration. It develops the melodic interval of a fifth and the essence (motif) of a very famous enigmatic fifth, with the listener is encouraged to discover.
