Program Notes
A stone citadel, constructed in 1903, sits atop Prospect Hill in Somerville, Mass. This edifice commemorates the fortification of the hill during the Revolutionary War, where tradition tells of George Washington raising the first Grand Union Flag on January 1, 1776. Residents of Somerville commemorate this anniversary every New Year's Day with readings, songs, a reenactment in colonial garb, and a military salute with a commemorative flag raised atop the tower. Recent structural renovations allow the monument to once again open to the public, providing sweeping views of the Boston skyline.
Prospect Hill was written for Charles Peltz and the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble for their May 2016 performance, "From Steeples and Mountains: A New England Sampler," at the Ottawa National Arts Center.
