Program Notes
A work to celebrate forty years of outstanding performances by one of the foremost community bands in the nation, called “Medalist” by its founders to signify superior achievement. A work influenced by the classic band literature of Shostakovich, Persichetti, H. Owen Reed, Clifton Williams and Ron Nelson, with a bit of Copland thrown in for good measure. A work to express my pleasure in writing for excellent players in a group which has always had as one of its goals to provide community musicians with an opportunity to perform and maintain their valuable musical skills. (As I wrote, I thought, “They’re going to need them to cope with these outlandish keys!”)
