Program Notes
This emotional work was inspired by the composer's visit to the cathedral de Notre Dame Des Calades in the idyllic French village of Villefrance-sur-Saone. While there he observed a pair of worshippers singing a beautiful polyphonic chant. In the composer's words, this work "relives that sanctified moment, dislocated from time and space."
A peaceful opening section begins with a gentle melody stated by flutes and clarinets. The full ensemble soon enters as the piece explores a variety of contrasting textures and dynamic levels before moving to a glorious final section followed by a soft, delicate conclusion.
