Program Notes

In introductory remarks to the premiere performance of Prayer for Band, later re-titled Prayers for a Troubled Nation, composer Jack Stamp described his memories of the turbulent social conditions of the 1960s, with its unrest, incivility, and violent death of esteemed leaders. He was saddened to observe this same incivility and social strife arising in the United States of late 2016 and 2017, and he was moved by a positive need to compose a work to prey for civility, to celebrate our fellow men and women. He pointed out that all we have on earth in the final analysis is each other.

The work consists of two melodies, joined together by shorts hymns or prayers.

Prayer for Band was written by University of Minnesota director of bands Emily Threinen, who had requested the work.

N.B. The Indiana University of Pennsylvania performance on 9 March 2018 used a computer application called MUSÉIK that allowed projected images to be synchronized with, to follow, the live music, rather than the reverse in which the conductor is forced to follow the audio/visual stream with a click track.
