Program Notes
Portrait of a Trumpet is a characteristic example of Nestico’s compositional skill: full exploitation of the colors and nuances of the full band, while accentuating the sound of the solo trumpet. Full command of legato style is demanded of the ensemble, while expressive musicianship and a flair for playing in a jazz style are placed in the hands of the soloist.

Sammy Nestico composed Portrait of a Trumpet, a solo trumpet work dedicated to the memory of Conrad Gozzo (New Britain, Conn. 1922 - Burbank, Calif., 1964), an Italian-American trumpet player who was the lead trumpet in several important jazz orchestras such as Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton and Henry Mancini.
