Program Notes

This is a suite that uses Gaelic folk and peasant tunes, all with modal qualities. The Piper's Dance is mostly pentatonic with the occasional sixth tone added as an ornament. My Love Is Coming Home is on a six-tone scale for the first eight measures, then changes to an ancient mode in a free, soaring melody. The Captain is a vigorous marching air, and in this setting there are bagpipe drones.
