Program Notes

Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have walked about thirty days and 550 miles from the Abbey of Cluny in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain in search of absolution and spiritual fulfillment. The remains of St. James, patron Saint of Spain, are believed to be buried there. In 711 AD, St. James is said to have descended from the sky mounted on a white charger having a white banner with a blood red cross in one hand and in the other a flashing sword to win the battle against the Moorish invaders. The dangerous and difficult pilgrimage to Compostela included Kings, Knights, clergymen and Peasants and continues to this day.

Pilgrimage to Compostela opens with a stirring unison introduction, using the notes of the first theme. After a reflective interlude, the first them begins and is then quickly taken up by other "pilgrims." A new theme is then introduced with the first theme being used as a cantus firmus. The character of the piece changes as the brass section asserts itself along with the percussion section soli. The piece comes to a rousing conclusion as the "pilgrims" arrive safely to the sounding of the cathedral bells in Compostela.

Pilgrimage to Compostela was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Southeast Polk (Iowa) High School Concert Band under the direction of Ms. Jacquelyn Meunier.
