Program Notes

In 1996, Robert Bazzel, Director of Bands at Sterling High School in Runnemede, New Jersey, commissioned Pastoral Nocturne in memory of Jennifer Persia. Jennifer was a clarinetist as well as Captain of the Color Guard in the marching band. The outer sections of Pastoral Nocturne serve as an elegy, while the center section has a march-like quality. Pastoral Nocturne encompasses many of the emotions that remain from this tragedy, both the joy and the energy of Jennifer's life and the sadness and despair that many continue to feel.
