Program Notes

Pas de Quatre, literally “step of four”, is a French term used to identify ballet dance for four people.

The choice of the title, and its relationship with the ballet, denotes a particular interest of the composer for its choreographic nature, which is improved by treating the quartet of clarinets as a unique polyphonic instrument. This quality gives the soloists the possibility of unifying the gestures through the interpretation, giving the music a visual power that reinforces the concertante style of the work.

Pas de Quatre has been commissioned by Barcelona Clarinet Players.
