Program Notes

This programmatic work depicts an idyllic sunrise over Palo Duro Canyon in the Texas Panhandle, a canyon system revered for its size and multicolored layers of rock. The piece begins with flutes playing a tranquil melody depicting the first glimpse of sunlight. The melody is then passed to the trumpets as the music builds to a faster, rousing main section with galloping rhythms, and bold melodic and harmonic material that easily conveys images of horses and cattle drives as well as the vastness and grandeur of the landscape. The piece then slows to a brief, majestic passage before the driving rhythms return bringing the composition to a dramatic conclusion.
